Background and Objectives: Antioxidant alpha lipoic acid and β-defensin 1 protein may have a positive effect on the quality of sperm parameters. In this study, the effect of sperm incubation with alpha lipoic acid antioxidant and β-defensin 1 protein were assessed on sperm motility and viability at different times. Methods: In this experimental study, routine semen analysis was carried out on 59 infertile men according to the World Health Organization criteria (2010). Semen samples were processed by density gradient centrifugation. Then, samples were divided into three groups: control, processed semen sample treated with alpha-lipoic acid, and processed semen sample treated with beta-defensin 1. Then, all portions were evaluated for sperm motility and viability. The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: The mean percentage of motility in alpha-lipoic acid and β-defensin 1 groups after 1 and 2 hours, showed a statistically significant increase (p=0. 05), while at the 3rd hour, only alpha-lipoic acid group had a significant increase in sperm motility. The mean percentage of sperm viability in alpha-lipoic acid and β-defensin 1 groups showed a significant increase compared to the control group after 1, 2, and 3 hours (p≤ 0. 05). Conclusion: Although both alpha-lipoic acid and beta-defensin protein are effective for maintenance of sperm motility and viability after separation of time, it is recommended to use alpha-lipoic acid in sperm processing medium to maintain sperm motility and viability.

Background and Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic intestinal disorder, which is characterized by irritating pain during defecation or alteration of the bowel habits. In the curent study, the association of dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) with the risk of this syndrome, was investigated in a large population of Iranian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 3363 adults in Isfahan. To assess GI and GL, a diet was used. The presence of IBS was evaluated using a modified Persian version of the ROME III questionnaire. General characteristics and dietary intakes of the participants across quintiles of dietary GI and GL, were investigated using one-way ANOVA, Chi square, and logistic regression in different models. Results: In total, 748 subjects (22. 2%) had IBS. The participants with the highest dietary GI had higher risk for IBS compared to those in the lowest category (OR: 1. 34; 95% CI: 1. 03-1. 75). However, this association was not significant after adjusting for potential confounders (OR: 1. 14; 95% CI: 0. 81-1. 61). A positive significant relationship was found between dietary GI and odds of IBS-constipation predominant (IBS-C) (OR: 1. 96; 95% CI: 1. 09-3. 52), but was not observed for IBSdiarrhea predominant (IBS-D) (OR: 0. 78; 95% CI: 0. 43-1. 40). There was no significant association between dietary GL and risk of total IBS or its subtypes. No significant association was found between dietary GI and GL and severity of IBS. Conclusion: The results of this study showed a significant association between dietary GI and risk of IBS and IBS-D as well as severity of IBS. However, a significant positive association was found between dietary GI and IBS-C, and no significant association was found between dietary GL and risk of total IBS or its subtypes as well as IBS severity.

Background and Objectives: Diabetic nephropathy is one of the dangerous complications of diabetes, which has a relatively high incidence in diabetic patients and causes kidney failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of probiotic honey consumption on inflammatory and oxidative stress indices in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients with diabetic nephropathy. Patients were randomly divided into two groups including: group consuming probiotic honey containing 108 CFU/g of Bacillus coagulans T11 and group consuming control honey (n=30 each group) 25g/day for 3 months. At baseline and 3 months after consumption of honey samples, fasting blood samples were taken from the patients to determine glycemic index, lipid factors, and inflammatory and oxidative stress indices. Results: In this study, after 3 months of intervention, serum insulin levels (1. 2± 1. 8 vs.-0. 1± 1. 3μ IU/ml, p=0. 004), HOMA-IR (0. 5± 0. 6 vs. 0. 003± 0. 4, p=0. 002), serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (1. 9± 2. 4 vs.-0. 2± 2. 7mg/l, p=0. 01) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (-0. 1± 0. 6vs. +0. 6± 1. 0μ mol/l, p=0. 002) significantly decreased in patients consumed probiotic honey compared to the patients in the control group. Also, quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) score significantly improved (+0. 005± 0. 009 vs.-0. 0007± 0. 005, p=0. 004). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that probiotic honey consumption for 3 months in patients with diabetic nephropathy causes improvement in insulin metabolism, serum hs-CRP level, and plasma MDA, but does not affect other metabolic indices.

Background and Objectives: Special features of camel urine and milk have caused their wide consumption in Islamic and traditional medicine as an anti-microbial, antioxidant, and liver protective substance. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of camel urine and milk in carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) induced cirrhosis. Methods: Twenty-four male rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (control, received olive oil, CCL4, camel milk treated, camel urine treated, and camel urine-milk treated). The CCL4-induced cirrhosis model in groups 3 to 6, was intraperitoneal injection of CCL4. Rats in control, olive oil, and CCL4 groups, intraperitoneally received CCL4 to induce cirrhosis. In the treatment groups, camel milk, urine, and their combination were gavaged respectively. Initial and final body weight as well as serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP, albumin and triglyceride and total cholesterol, were measured in all groups. Liver morphology was assessed using Hematoxellin-Eosin (H&E) staining. Data statistical analysis was carried out using one way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc (in case of significance) tests. Results: In this study, Serum level of AST, ALT and ALP significantly increased in the CCL4 group compared to the control group, there was no significant difference in the body weight among most groups; but only the simultaneous consumption of camel’ s milk and urine in cirrhotic rats decreased the serum levels of ALT, ALP, and triglyceride compared to the CCL4 group. Conclusion: the findings of the present study indicated that simultaneous consumption of camel urine and milk improve cell damage induced by CCL4.

Abstract:

Background and Objectives: The prevalence of obesity is rising rapidly worldwide. Diet modification is one of the best possible solutions for prevention and treatment of obesity. One of the diets suggested in this context is the DASH diet (an antihypertensive diet). The present study was designed to determine the effectiveness of this diet on anthropometric indices and body composition in healthy obese women. Methods: This study is a randomized parallel controlled trial, carried out on 44 healthy obese women. After an adjustment period, the participants were assigned to intervention (DASH diet) and control (usual dietary advice) groups. Anthropometric indices and body composition were assessed every 2 weeks. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-, independent sample t-, and analysis of covariance tests. Results: After following the DASH eating pattern for three months, variables of weight (p=0. 04), body mass index (p=0. 03), waist circumference (p=0. 01), and waist to hip ratio (p=0. 02) significantly decreased compared to the control group. However, no significant change was observed in body composition of the participants (p≥ 0. 05). Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of obesity, adherence to the DASH diet, as health promotion model, is recommended for prevention of various disorders, especially obesity.

Background and Objectives: Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used as medicine and spice in Iran, China, and India since ancient times. Currently ginger is used in many foods, beverages and pharmaceutical agents. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activities of ginger essential oil on some pathogenic strains and to determine the chemical compounds, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of the ginger essential oil using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Methods: In this experimental study, identification of chemical compounds of the ginger essential oil and their quantitative measurement was performed using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry devices. The antimicrobial properties were determined by various qualitative and quantitative methods [disc diffusion agar, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC)]. Measurement of total phenol and antioxidant potential were carried out by Seevers and Daly colorimetric and radical scavenging methods, respectively. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: In this study, the highest and the lowest diameters of the inhibition zone at the concentration of 100mg/ml were observed for Candida albicans and Salmonella typhi, respectively. The MIC of the ginger essential oil was equal to 50, 50, 25, 6. 25, 12. 5, 12. 5, 6. 25, and 6. 25mg/ml for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria innocua, Bacillus cereus, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger, respectively. The MBC/MFC of the essential oil, were higher than MIC. Zingiberene (29. 48%) was the major compound in the ginger essential oil, and the antioxidant activity (IC50) and total phenolic content of ginger essential oil were equal to 93. 45μ g/ml and 76. 65 mg GAE/g, respectively. Conclusion: The results of the current study showed that the effect of ginger essential oil on Gram-positive bacteria was higher as compared to Gramnegative bacteria. Therefore, clinical trials are suggested for future researches.

Abstract:

and Objectives: One of the most commonly used concepts of Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) is movement and stasis of the body fluids, which has not yet been independently studied. In this article, ITM contents have been re-studied on this concept, and according to the dispersion of the content, classification and its therapeutic benefits have been mentioned. Methods: In this library research study, the contents related to “ movement and stasis of the body fluids” have been collected from ITM textbooks and recent academic papers. Results: In the traditional medicine references, movement and stasis of the body fluids has been discussed in a scattered manner under most of the topics and headlines of ITM. Seasonal changes, foods, medications, and severe physical and mental changes can be mentioned as important factors in movement and stasis of the body fluids. In existing literatures, some signs have been noted, which help to understand the movement or stasis of fluids or specific humor. On the other hands, movement or stasis of the fluids, which the most important of them are the four humors, can lead to physiological or pathological outcomes. Conclusion: The aforementioned issue is one of the most widely used concepts in ITM, which has not been scarcely discussed. Understanding the etiology of body fluids movement and stasis, its sign/symptoms, results, and complications, not only help to identify the causes of a large number of diseases, but also can help to maintain health and prevention of diseases. Moreover, this issue can be effectively and actively used in the treatment and control of treatment side effects.
