Abstract:

Background: Stroke is the third cause of death worldwide after cancers and cardiovascular disease. Many disabilities occurred after stroke. In the United States in each second one person suffer a stroke. Unfortunately there are no accurate statistics of the incidence of stroke. In this study we examined the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) about risk factors for stroke in people referred to health centers in Isfahan. Methods: In this cross-sectional study 332 person who referred to health centers were evaluated. Sampling was done systematically and the data gathered by KAP questionnaire were analyzed using SPSS15.Findings: Totally 332 person (144 men and 188 women) were enrolled in this study. The mean age of men and women were 42±8.5 and 41.1±7.3 respectively. The mean score of KAP about risk factors for stroke is 14.5±1.6.Conclusion: In this study knowledge, attitude and practice about stroke risk factors was not desirable. Therefore the health system should plan to promote awareness about stroke in the community.

Abstract:

Background: b-carbolines alkaloids such as Harmane have been found in common plant-derived foodstuffs such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, grape and mushrooms. These alkaloids have many cognitive effects including alteration short and long term memory. In the present study, the effect of intra-CA1 injection of nitric oxide agonist and antagonist on amnesia induced by Harmane was examined in mice. Methods: In this experimental study 305 adult male NMRI mice were used. Mice were anaesthetized and cannulae implanted bilaterally in the CA1 regions of the dorsal hippocampus using stereotaxic method. One week after cannulae implantation, mice trained in a step-down type inhibitory avoidance task, and tested 24 h after training to measure step-down latency as a scale of memory.Findings: Pre-training systemic injection of Harmane induced amnesia. Pre-test intra-dorsal hippocampal injection of L-arginine (8 mg/mouse) or L-NAME (10 and 15 mg/mouse) potentiate and reverse amnesia induced by pre-training Harmane, respectively, but pretraining injection of L-arginine or L-NAME 5 min before Harmane could not block Harmane amnesia. Conclusion: The finding in this study indicated that exist complex interaction between nitric oxide system of dorsal hippocampus and amnesia induced by Harmane.

Abstract:

Background: Colorectal cancer is the third cause of cancer death in western countries. Age, inadequate diet, obesity, inactivity and genetic changes are some of the risk factors of colorectal cancer.Corelation of genetic diversity in homologous recombination repair system with cancer was evaluated in many recent studies. This study was done to investigate the correlation of T241M polymorphism in Xrcc3 gene and colorectal cancers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study after collecting blood samples and extraction genomic DNA, genotype distribution of the polymorphism was determined by RFLP-PCR (Restriction fragment lengh-polymerase-Polymerase chain reaction) method.Findings: A significant corelation between T241M polymorphism with colorectal cancer was seen.Age and family history were also corelated with this cancer. Although, there was no statistically relationship between smoking status and colon cancer, but it showed correlation with rectum cancer and it has been also observed that the most occurance of metastatic activity is in the rectum. Conclusion: According to our study T241M polymorphism in Xrcc3 gene from homologous recombination repair systm could be a suitable factor for early diagnosis of colorectal cancer especially rectum and its co-operation with smoking status.

Abstract:

Background: Patients illness perception is formed base on patients beliefs and perceived information about their condition and it may influence the individual’s mental health and how the patient deal with the medical condition. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between illness perception and symptom severity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 160 consecutive IBS patients, referred to the gastrointestinal and psychosomatic clinics at khorshid hospital in Isfahan, were selected. The patients completed illness perception questionnaires and the IBS Symptom Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS). Data was analyzed by pearson correlation and multi variant regression models.Findings: A relationship between illness perception and symptom severity in patients with IBS was observed (R=0.546, P=0.001). The results showed that 39% of variation in symptom severity is predicted by variation in illness perception components (R=0.63, R Squer=0.39). Rregression model showed that only the identity and emotion components of illness perception can predict symptom severity variation (P=0.04). However, there is no relationship between other subscales of illness perception and symptom severity. Conclusion: This study showed that there is a relationship between illness perception and symptom severity. So the interventions based on illness perception is proposed for managing symptom severity in IBS.

Abstract:

Background: Considering the role of maternal TSH receptor blocking Ab (TRAb) in the etioligy of congenital hypothyroidism, the aim of this research was to determine its role among congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in Isfahan. Methods: In this case control study, neonates with CH and their mothers and a group of healthy neonates and their mothers selected as case and control group, respectively. Venous blood samples obtained for the measurement of TRAb. The TSH of mothers was measured also. The prevalence of positive TRAb and the level of TSH were compared between studied groups.Findings: 50 neonates with CH and their mothers and 150 healthy neonates and their mothers studied in case and control groups, respectively. The prevalence of positive TRAb in neonates with CH and their mothers were higher than control group (P<0.05). There was significant relationship between the TRAb and occurrence of congenital hypothyroidism (P<0.05).Conclusion: It seems that autoimmunity has an important role in the etiology of congenital hypothyroidism in Isfahan. In order to obtain more conclusive results in these field further studies to determine its role in the etiology of permanent and transient congenital hypothyroidism in accordance with studying other autoantibodies is recommended.
