The need for controlling population growth necessitates the use and development of various contraceptive methods.
This descriptive analytical investigation was undertaken to examine the causes of contraceptive, methods discontinuation among women referred to Bandar Abbas Health Centers in 1999.
The subjects were 1000 women who had already discontinued a contraceptive method at least one time.
The results showed that the onset of mental and physical complications was the commonest cause of cessation of oral combination contraceptive pills, Norplant, DMPA and IUD. In the case of condom, Minipill and withdrawal method, the risk of pregnancy and medical staff recommendation were the commonest causes. 88% of subjects used other contraceptive methods while 12% of them did not use any at all. The average period of using Norplant, IUD, Pill, Condom and injection were 34.5, 33.5, 20.3, 14.8 and 13.3 months respectively.
Regarding the short periods of using contraceptive methods, and the causes of their cessation, it seems that before selecting a method, women should be examined carefully and the equipment should be provided for this purpose.
