USING THE PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH IN PLANNING THE SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM FOR THE GUIDANCE SCHOOLS

Abstract

 This paper is essentially based on the report of a research on the use of PROBLEM SOLVING approach in the SOCIAL STUDIES course at the guidance level. The status and characteristics of the approach in teaching SOCIAL STUDIES are initially reviewed. Then by identifying the use of the approach at different levels of thinking, its use with problems of different level of difficulty is outlined. Furthermore, suitable subject matters within the SOCIAL STUDIES curriculum for use at different stages of the approach are introduced. Finally the curriculum and teacher's guides developed for the designed curriculum are presented.
