TITLE: INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS EVALUATING APPROACHES: BACKGROUND & FUTURE TRENDS

Abstract

 Introduction: Information retrieval (IR) systems play an important role in the collecting and availability of information and knowledge. Uses of the web and search engines as a daily life activity are associated with these systems. Because of their importance, performance and impact on the information behavior process, this combination requires a quality review and evaluation.Methods: This article is a review and analytical/critical approach.Results: This paper first looked at the evolution of IR systems and has separated the types of IR systems evaluation. Then in a more detailed account, the performance evaluation of existing approaches to IR systems is discussed. After a review and criticism of these approaches, the paper has introduced a comprehensive and integrated multiple criteria decision- theoretic approach for the evaluation of IR systems provided by Wang and Forgionne.Conclusion: Researches on the evaluation in the field of IR have mainly focused on one of the aspects, and different approaches have been separated. The main challenge in trying to evaluate IR systems is is how to apply a variety of scales, in an integrated and comprehensive approach. This shows the direction of future researches in this field. The research presented in this paper which is based on above approach can advise researchers in this field.
