Title

STUDY OF THE OXIDATIVE STRESS MARKERS IN BLADDER CANCER PATIENTS IN COMPARISON WITH HEALTHY SUBJECTS

Pages

  167-172

Abstract

Background and Aim: Despite many researches done on the relationship between OXIDATIVE STRESS and cellular antioxidant defenses in different cancers, there are limited researches about the role of OXIDATIVE STRESS in BLADDER CANCER. So we decided to study the serum MDA and TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY in patients with BLADDER CANCER in comparison with healthy individuals.Materials and Methods: During this case - control study, 51 patients with BLADDER CANCER and 58 normal subjects were selected (considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria) by simple sampling. After obtaining write consent from them, blood samples were prepared after 8 hours of fasting. MDA and TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY was measured in all samples. Finally data were compared with student t test between two groups. SPSS V.13 was used for data analysis. Results: There was a significant increase in serum MDA concentration (P<0.001) and significant decrease in TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY (P<0.001) in case subjects in comparison with control group. Conclusion: The results of the present study confirm this hypothesis that oxidative reactions and cellular damages induced by such reactions and insufficient antioxidant capacity can be two of the more important mechanisms in BLADDER CANCER induction.
