Abstract

Background and Aim: Although FAMILY CAREGIVING is an essential part of health care systems, there is not any qualitative research about the nature of FAMILY CAREGIVING process of Iranian FRAIL ELDERLY at home. The present study is part of a larger study about family care giving process with the aim of determining FACILITATORS AND BARRIERS to this process.Material and Method: In this GROUNDED THEORY study, according to Strauss and Corbin's approach (1998), 14 family caregivers participated and data was gathered by in-depth semi structured interviews and observation in the field and documentary movies. All of the interviews and data were transcribed and analyzed through open, axial and selective coding. Some triangulation techniques as Gathering data through different methods, prolonged engagement with caregivers, member check by participants and experts, were used to increase rigor of the study.Results: Findings of this study indicate there are 2 main categories consisting facilitator and hindering factors in the process under study. Available family assistant, care giving knowledge, familial support, and background of interpersonal relationship between care giver-receiver, personal characteristics and financial status of caregiver and care recipient were subcategories of facilitating factors category. Absence of family participation, insufficient caregiving knowledge, caregiving burden, inappropriate caregiving context, absence of appropriate health care system and formal governmental support were subcategories of hindering factors. Conclusion: Modifying facilitator and hindering factors by improvement of other family members' participation and assistance, support of the caregiver by other family member, improvement of caregiving knowledge, providing facilities and establishing appropriate health care, wellbeing and social security policies not only for caregiver but also for care recipient would be effective in the management of the process by caregivers.
