Abstract

Having tried to discover the soul’s nature, thinkers have offered different views on the Perfection of the soul. Emphasizing the ethical Virtues and referring to the philosophical and theological arguments about Happiness, al-Farabi depicts a comprehensive picture of the evolution of the happy man’s soul. He considers the man’s goal in achieving Happiness through the acquisition of Virtues in the natural world. Nonetheless, ultimate Happiness is achieved just by releasing earthy attributes. Although al-Farabi uses the intellect as a vehicle for the soul to obtain Happiness; finally, he does not consider Happiness as a purely rational thing; rather, he believes that using the power of thought as well as rational contemplation are both necessary to acquire appropriate moral thoughts and actions, by which the soul’s first and later life are linked to its true consciousness.
