Abstract

 Grain PROTEIN CONTENT has great influence on nutrition value, semolina and pasta characteristics of DURUM WHEAT. The purpose of the present study was to map QTLs for grain PROTEIN CONTENT and significance of them in DURUM WHEAT (Triticum turgidum L, var durum) using a DOUBLED HAPLOID population including parental genotypes, 155 lines and control varieties. The population lines were evaluated for grain PROTEIN CONTENT in three locations of Saskatchewan, Canada in 2001 and 2002. The parents were scored with 517 wheat MICROSATELLITE markers for genotypic assessment. Polymorphic primers in the parents were tested on the whole population lines. QTL analysis or detection of relationship between phenotypic and genotypic data was done based on composite interval mapping based on least square means. The results indicated four QTLs associated with grain PROTEIN CONTENT trait in the population.Effects of the QTLs varied depend on environment. Two QTLs located on the chromosome 4BL and their effects were highly significant at four and two environments and explained 9-15 and 7-8 percents of grain PROTEIN CONTENT phenotypic variation, respectively. The other two QTLs located on the 2B and 7B also showed significant association with PROTEIN CONTENT at four and three environments and explained and explained 7-8 and 8-9 percents of grain PROTEIN CONTENT phenotypic variation, respectively depending on environments. Combining analysis on the six environments data showed a location on 4B impress genetic environment interaction.
