Abstract

Imamat is a Divine position which is granted to some of the Prophets and selected obedients. Different meanings and definitions are given from Imamat. Upon such meanings and definitions different bases for understanding of the position of Imamat is provided.Imam is one is obeyed and followed. According to the verse 124 from the second chapter of the holy Qur’an, and other verses and related traditions, Imamat is a Divine Position (promise) which is granted by the Almighty God, and is higher than Prophethood and Messengership. The Imamat position was bestowed on Abraham after the Divine tests. Some of the Sunni writers have interpreted "Imamat" in this verse (2:124) as Prophethood and messengership. The viewpoints of the Sunni exegetists, much as Fakhr Razi and the main Shia writers about this verse are reviewed. Some of the interpretors and writers have provided a spiritual meaning for Imamat in this verse, which is more or Iess extracted from the philosophical and gnostic attitudes.
