Title

DESCARTES' ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT AND ITS MEDIEVAL ORIGINS

Pages

  17-43

Abstract

The ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT is an existential argument put forward by Descartes to prove the existence of God. Although Descartes claims that his argument is original, the fact is that Saint Anselm introduced the same argument in the 11th century. This article intends to explain and clarify the core of Descartes' and Anselm's argument and the nature of the influence of Anselm on Descartes and expound the criticisms raised against it.
