Title

INCIDENCE AND RISK FACTORS OF DIABETES MELLITUS AFTER KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

Pages

Abstract

Objective: Several medical complications were detected after KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION which most of them are related to administration of immunosuppressive drugs. DIABETES MELLITUS (DM) is one of these complications. DM increase mortality and morbidity in these patients because of increasing rate of cardiovascular disease and diabetic nephropathy in transplanted kidney. This study was designed to assess incidence and risk factors of emergence of DM in patients who have undergone KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION in Golestan hospital in Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences. Subjects and methods: 323 transplanted patients (180 male & 143 female) who were normoglycemic before KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION were assessed after transplantation. Results: DIABETES MELLITUS were detected in 28 patients (8.66%). Peak incidence of DM was in first 6 months after KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. There were not any new cases of DM after 5 years from KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. Peak incidence was in forth and fifth decade. Conclusion: Incidence of DM after transplantation in this study was similar to other studies used CYCLOSPORINE as immunosuppressant drug, and lesser than tarcrolymus. Using CORTICOSTEROID and cyclosporin, patient age, male sex, hepatitic C and non-relative donor was detected to be the risk factors for DM after KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. Because of high incidence of DM after KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION it is recommended to assess blood glucose in follow up of these patients.
