Pages

  638-642

Abstract

Objective: PARAPOX VIRUS is the agent responsible for ORF disease which is basically seen in sheep and goats. It can be transferred to the human by DIRECT CONTACT with infected animals or indirect contact to infected meats or contaminated butchery instruments like knife. So this disease is common in those who are working with sheep and goat. The skin lesion is usually seen in fingers and could be considered in differential diagnosis in dermatological conditions lesion heals in less than 6 weeks. The ORF disease run is in family and was reported world wide.Subjects and Methods: In this survey eleven patients with ORF from five Iranian families were selected. Diagnosis was based on pathological changes in tissue specimens. Results: Most of the cases had a previous wound or developed a cetaceous injury while chopping meat. Contact with such wounds among the family was the reason for spreading the disease. Conclusion: Despite of the rarity of ORF disease among URBAN dwellers, the possibility of its spreading in families still exists. Therefore, it is recommended that, following history taking and clinical assessments, ORF should be considered especially in cases were there are similar dermal involvements among family members.
