Title

A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FULL WEANING AND DIARRHOEAL DISEASE INCIDENCE IN TODDLERS

Abstract

Objective: Diarrhoeal disease is one of the most common diseases in children under 5 years old and breast feeding is the most effective strategy to prevent it. Weaning from breast milk to family food and the age of it differs in various cultures and this may affect the outcomes of weaning. Because prolonged breast feeding (over 1 year) is common in Iran, we designed a prospective study on the possible relationship between FULL WEANING and diarrhoeal disease incidence in 94 partially breast- fed TODDLERS in the west area of Tehran.Subjects and Methods: At the beginning of the study, mothers were interviewed and asked about some explanatory and demographic Variables of their children and all the family. Then, these children were followed for diarrhoea for at least for 1 month before and after the date of FULL WEANING.Results: Independent of the age of weaning, an increase was found in the INCIDENCE OF DIARRHOEA in the first month after FULL WEANING in comparison with this incidence before it (0.04 V.S 0.18, p<0.005). There were two risk factors for increasing the incidence rate of weanling diarrhoea: 1- High number of breast feeding episodes at night in the pre-weaning period (0.025<p<0.05) 2-Abrupt FULL WEANING (p=0.008).Conclusion: These results suggest that FULL WEANING is associated with a high incidence rate of diarrhoeal disease and there is a vulnerable period soon after breast feeding is stopped.  This finding is important for mothers and health workers to pay more attention to the children during this high risk period. We also conclude that, to reduce the risk of weaning diarrhoea, mothers should gradually wean their children from breast milk.
