Abstract

With the beginning of industrial revolution, invention of cars and developments of cities, the role of pedestrians was gradually prioritized and the enclosed pedestrian space in cities was weakened and also the space quality of public areas of the city, urban open spaces and sidewalks decreased. Nowadays most of the urban public spaces and streets are dominated by cars because of sudden increase of vehicles and the dependency of urban life pattern on them. Considering the formation of the first steps in designing pedestrian oriented streets in Iran and the significant impact of this kind of streets on forming all sorts of quantitative and qualitative social interactions and increasing citizen’ s life quality, in the present study we will present the introduction and review the relations between main components for promoting social interactions in pedestrian oriented streets. In this regard, the impact of readability which is one of the main components of promoting social interactions as well as other components like vitality, security and safety have been studied. This research is a practical research which has been fulfilled in a survey manner. The statistical population of this research was chosen from among the citizens of Qazvin from Khayyam and Sepah streets pedestrians. In this research we used a self-made questionnaire and after ensuring its reliability and validity, we distributed it among our sample population. In order to analyze our data, we used confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The results of data analysis confirmed our conceptual model. Also the research results confirmed the positive and meaningful effects of readability on vitality, safety, security, positive and meaningful effects of vitality on safety and security in the society which is our case study.
