Abstract

The verse "In the Name of God" is subject to different conceptions and interpretations. Should it be considered as a complete verse, or more as a sacred sentence added to the Holy Quran? Was it revealed only once or, on the contrary, as many times as it is quoted throughout the text? How should it be recited in the daily prayers? And, if it is in his essence a verse, how was it revealed? This paper aims to answer these questions linked to a sentence so meaningful and with such a great emotional content. This verse is the light that guides us in the sura al-Fat~a , and in the other sura-s, it exalts God, His beneficence and His graciousness. The different views concerning this verse goes back to the Umayyad time, especially the reign of MuawTyyah.
