Abstract

"Phenomenology" has roots in philosophers' thoughts and discourses such as Descartes, Hegel, and Husserl. Merleau-Ponty, following the perspectives of Husserl and Heidegger, developed a phenomenological system in the realm of art that is highly beneficial for the understanding, evaluation, and interpretation of artistic works. Merleau-Ponty's approach can be clearly traced in the world of cinema, where the structural elements of a film, such as the screenplay and editing, are analyzed. In this view, the artwork is studied and interpreted as a phenomenon arising from the perception and emotions of its creator, considering their lived experience and embodiment. The nature of sensory perception is in the way that it encompasses not only the subject itself but also its surroundings, investigating them as a lived body within their surrounding actions. In this manuscript, which focuses on the phenomenological analysis of cinema and the screenplays of Krzysztof Kieś, lowski, we first study the history and origins of Phenomenology as a philosophical approach and explain its key figures and thinkers, as well as their study methods and approaches. Subsequently, we independently analyze Kieś, lowski's Three Colors screenplay using a phenomenological research method, as well as its structural elements. Furthermore, we provide a framework and model for phenomenological studies in cinema by emphasizing Merleau-Ponty's philosophical and cinematic perspective.
