Title

LESSER MEDIA IN THE LATE ACHAEMENID PERIOD: A RESEARCH IN ADMINISTRATIVE GEOGRAPHY

Pages

  23-30

Abstract

This article examines the ADMINISTRATIVE GEOGRAPHY of the late Achaemenids, focused on LESSER MEDIA. As the article describes the land of Media extended approximately from Aras River to Alvand Mountain and Central Desert of Iran. In the Achemenid sources, the Median province mostly mentioned after the Persis or Elam in second or third place, which shows its importance in this period. This province after the collapse of Achaemenids was divided into two parts of lesser and greater Media and Atropates, former satrap of Media revolted against Macedonians in LESSER MEDIA. Henceforth, this part of Media was called Aturpatakan after the founder of the dynasty. The former name of Aturpatakan , that is LESSER MEDIA shows that this area has been settled by the Medians. The article by reviewing Greek writings, maintains that the Northern and Western borders of Auturpatakan were the same borders of former province of Media, in the North, the Aras River was regarded its boundary with Armenia and Albania, and in the West, the extension of Zagros ranges was its border with Anatolia. Also it was bounded on the North-east and South- West by Alborz ranges and Central Desert of Iran. Moreover, as the author emphasizes Ganzak was its mot important city after the collapse of Achaemenids.
