Abstract

Involving of the ulama in public affairs during the Safavids and the Qajars led to their integration in the political Shi'i establishment and eventually formation of the theory of "Islamic Monarchy". Most of the ulama supported this theory; however, there were differences among them regarding the duties, extent of authority and position of sultan. In the process of applying the theory into practice these differences became more and more evident and even in some period’s conflicts and confrontation broke out. These conflicts were manifested during the CONSTITUTIONAL REVOLUTION, between the opposition and supporters of the Revolution. The best example among these ulama, were AKHUND MULA MUHAMMAD KAZEM KHURASANI, one of the great leaders of the Revolution and SEYED MUHAMMAD KAZEM TABATABEI YAZDI, one of the important religious authorities among the opposition group. This paper will present a comparative study on political positions, reactions and behavior of these two religious authorities. The article argues that despite all differences between these two leaders, when Russian ("infidels") gave ultimatum to Iran and their military forces took over north of Iran the two religious authorities united and took a common position toward the conquerors.
