Title

EFFECT OF STABILITY TRAINING ON BALANCE RECOVERY IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENTS USING SAMPLE ENTROPY AS A NONLINEAR ANALYSIS METHOD

Abstract

Introduction: In MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS), the transmission of nerve impulses is impaired due to the destruction of myelin. It can lead to the balance problem such as neuromuscular system disorders. The analysis of the body center of pressure (COP) is commonly investigated to study the neuromuscular system and make clinical balance assessments. The main approach for COP analysis is the entropy method which is a powerful technique to study the complexity of the body kinematics.Materials and methods: in this experimental study, the COP fluctuation signals were recorded from twenty volunteer MS patients (10 men and 10 women aged 23-52 years). After signing the consent form, data were collected before and after twenty four sessions of BALANCE EXERCISES (conducted by the Balance System SD produced by Biodex ® produced in New York). The signals were then analyzed using two Entropy analysis methods. Results: The results of both methods after twelve weeks exercises showed a significant increase in the corresponding entropy measure of the COP fluctuations in subjects with MS. The entropy improvement was more significant in the frontal plane than the sagittal one, Pvalue=0.009, t=-2.910, and Pvalue=0.031, t=-2.331, respectively. Conclusion: The increase of the entropy measure indicated beneficial influence of the exercises on the recovery of the balance system in MS patients. Hence, these kinds of exercises could be suggested as an efficient clinical intervention for MS Patients.
