Abstract

The purpose of this article was to analyse some social factors that affect students' NATIONAL IDENTITY formation. Using a questionnaire, 427 high school students (237 girls and 190 boys) aged 14 to 17 were studied in Esfahan. In this study, the views of Henri Tajfel were utilized to explain NATIONAL IDENTITY. According to Tajfel, social identity consists of three aspects: cognitive, emotional and behavioral.The results indicate that the affective aspect of NATIONAL IDENTITY is the strongest aspect and the behavioral is the weakest aspect of NATIONAL IDENTITY. The findings also show that variables such as the national- orientedness of the family and of friends and television programs have the highest effects on students' NATIONAL IDENTITY and that variables like family socio-economic status, the education system, and the contents of textbooks had no significant effects on NATIONAL IDENTITY.
