Prediction of Anxiety Intensity Based on Ambivalence in Emotion Expression and Metacognitive Beliefs in People with Anxiety Disorder

Abstract

Introduction: According to the metacognitive model of anxiety, individuals with anxiety disorders often experience a cognitive-attentional syndrome characterized by excessive worry and a mix of positive and negative Metacognitive beliefs, which perpetuates anxiety symptoms. This research aimed to predict the severity of anxiety based on ambivalence in emotional expression and Metacognitive beliefs in people with anxiety disorders.Materials and Methods: This study employed a correlational research design. The statistical population included all patients with anxiety disorders who sought treatment at eight psychiatric centers in Kerman city in 2023. A simple random sampling method was used to select 217 participants. The measurement tools included King & Ammons' (1990) Ambivalence Questionnaire, Wells' (1997) Metacognitive Questionnaire, and Beck's (1990) Anxiety Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis with SPSS-22 software. Results: The findings revealed a positive and significant relationship between ambivalence in emotional expression and anxiety intensity (r=0.63), and a negative and significant relationship between Metacognitive beliefs and anxiety intensity (r=−0.52), both at P<0.01. ambivalence in emotional expression explained 52% of the variance in anxiety intensity, while Metacognitive beliefs accounted for 41%..Conclusion: The results suggest that ambivalence in emotional expression plays a stronger role than Metacognitive beliefs in the development of anxiety disorders. To address this, it is important to conduct various training courses and seminars aimed at changing societal perceptions regarding the control and expression of negative emotions.
