Abstract

Superabsorbent polymers can swell by absorbing a large amount of water or aqueous solution when set into soil. These micro-storage tanks absorb irrigation and rain water preventing them from percolating deeply into soil.After the absorption of water and as results of drying of the environment the water in the polymer will gradually discharge, keeping the soil moist for a long time, without any new irrigation.In this research, we investigated the inf1uence of one such polymer, namely, PR 3005 A on soil's physical properties such as water holding capacity, porosity and hydraulic conductivity for two types of soil (with loam and sandy loam texture). The results indicate that the above mentioned substance can increase water holding capacity in light soils and improve infiltration of heave siols.This is improvement of soil conditions decreases moisture stresses and increase irrigation efficiency in arid and semi-arid regions.It should be kept in mind that due to high price of the polymer, it can be used only for establishing trees, for which frequent irrigation would not be economic, or with high value green house crops.
