Abstract

 The release rate of non-exchangeable K (NEK) plays significant role in supplying available K, particularity in soils containing K-bearing minerals. Information about NEK release rate in soils of Iran is limited. The objectives of this work were to study the dynamic of NEK from 4 Gilan soils and soil separates by successive extraction with 0.5 mM citric acid over a period of 2500 h. Four soil samples were selected and their physic chemical and mineralogical properties were determined. NEK release after 2500 h in whole soil, silt and clay fractions ranged from 0.21-0.87, 0.18-0.37, and 0.49-2.31 cmol kg-1, respectively. The kinetics of cumulative NEK release was evaluated using the Elovlch, zero-order, parabolic diffusion law, first-order diffusion and power function equations. The Elovich and zero-order equations did not describe well the NEK release kinetics based on their lowest determination coefficient (R2) and their highest value of the standard error of the estimate (SE). In contrast, parabolic diffusion law, first-order and power function equations described the data satisfactorily suggesting that the diffusion process controlled the exchange reaction. The amour H of NEK released from whole soil was significantly correlated with exchangeable K and clay content. The b coefficient of the power function equation for whole soil was significantly correlated with the silt content, soil CEC and the CBC of the day fraction. Moreover, the initial release rate index was significantly correlated with the amount of clay and sill and exchangeable K. Results of this study indicate that the amount of K extracted with NH4OAc is a good measure of the rate and long term K replenishing power of the soils.
