Title

STUDY ON THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OF TEA LEAF EXTRACT CAMELLIA SINENSIS ON THE GROWTH OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA PTCC 1558

Pages

  71-78

Abstract

Extracts of leaves from CAMELLIA SINENSIS contains polyphenolic components with antimicrobial activity. Because TEA is the most widely drunk beverage in Iran, therefore investigation of its effects on PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA PTCC 1558 is very important. This study was undertaken to determine the INHIBITORY EFFECT of green TEA on the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro. Extracts from green leaf of six TEA clone were prepared using the percolation method and dried. In the next step, the growth INHIBITORY EFFECTs of green leaf TEA extracts were determined on the basis of interactions between the extracts with Pseudomonas aeruginosa pyogenes by the DISC DIFFUSION METHOD (3 times on different days). In order to study the antimicrobial activity of green TEA extract in differences concentration values were evaluated. Conjugation of the standard antibiotics disk with green leaf TEA extract had an INHIBITORY EFFECT on dilution 6.25. It seems that the INHIBITORY EFFECT of TEA on bacterial growth is directly related to its TAOC. The mechanism involved is probably through production of hydrogen peroxide by the TEA polyphenols acting as pro-oxidants. Our findings indicate the possibility of using proper amounts of TEA or polyphenols as nutritional supplements as an adjunct nutrition therapy in certain infections.
