Abstract

The term REPENTANCE as understood from the Persian dictionaries means to desist from sin, to return to the way of veracity and to feel remorse from committing sin. REPENTANCE is of high significance in mystic and religious teachings and thoughts, and thus major number of hadith narrators and authors of religious books have dealt with this issue in their works. No doubt, the effects of REPENTANCE in both personal and social aspects are noteworthy as it not only reforms the individual but also secures the society against the corruption.REPENTANCE if done with sincerity can bring about Divine blessing and soul purity in addition to the forgiveness of past sins. This article aims to deal with the high stand of REPENTANCE from religious-mystic standpoint based on the holy Quran and Nahjul Balaqa teachings. To this end, the author has referred to the authentic sources, including the books and documents written in both prose and verse, which are today existent.The present article also attempts to survey the high stand of REPENTANCE, the prerequisite for REPENTANCE acceptance, and more importantly, the diagnosis of sin in REPENTANCE acceptance. It then studies the effects of REPENTANCE from the standpoints of mystics and religious jurisprudents while observing the conformity of the Divine prophets and mystics’ views in this regard. Moreover, this article responds to a number of misunderstandings with regard to Iranian Mysticism, which is ascribed to some religions, such as Christianity.
