EFFECT OF MECHANICAL MILLING ON THE CARBOTHERMIC REDUCTION OF ZIRCON

Abstract

 Two different stoichiometric mixtures of ZIRCON (ZrSi04) and carbon active (C:Zircon molar ratios of 3:I and 6:1) were milled together for 5 hours. After Iron removal using 2 N Hydrochloric acid, Thermo-gravimetric analyses (TGA) were done on all samples under the flowing high purity Argon atmosphere. The XRD analysis on the solid residuals showed that rate of CARBOTHERMIC REDUCTION increased in five-hours-milled samples. Monoclinic ZIRCONIA/fa?page=1&sort=1&ftyp=all&fgrp=all&fyrs=all" target="_blank"> ZIRCONIA was observed in all reduced samples, however in the milled samples, tetragonal phase was also observed. Heating the milled C:Zircon with 6:1 molar ratio for one hour to 1400oC in high purity argon atmosphere resulted in formation of ZrC and SiC.
