Abstract

The purpose of the present research was to compare feelings of LONELINESS, MENTAL HEALTH and SELF-EFFICACY of the ELDERLY living with families and those residing in NURSING HOMEs in Ardabil. A cross-sectional causal comparative research methodology was used. The study population comprised all the ELDERLY men and women living either in NURSING HOMEs or with their families living in the city of Ardebil in 2010. The study sample of 150 ELDERLY persons (75 of whom were NURSING HOME residents and 75 others lived with their families) was selected using convenience sampling procedure. To collect research data the questionnaires tapping LONELINESS, MENTAL HEALTH and SELF-EFFICACY were used. Data were analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance. The findings showed a significant difference in LONELINESS, MENTAL HEALTH and SELF-EFFICACY between the ELDERLY living in families and those living in NURSING HOMEs (p<0.01). Results showed that living with other family members has a positive impact on the physical and MENTAL HEALTH of the ELDERLY. With regard to psychological and cultural status of the ELDERLY in Iran, the family seems to be the best place to meet the psychological needs of the ELDERLY.
