Title

ESTIMATING FETAL WEIGHT: CLINICALLY OR SONOGRAPHICALLY

Pages

  559-562

Abstract

Background: Estimation of fetal weight is of utmost importance in obstetric examination, indeed, misestimating is accompanied by misjudgment. Therefore, the present study was carried out over the parturients referring to Mahdieh hospital in 1999, to compare two methods of clinical and SONOGRAPHY in estimation of fetal weight. Materials and methods: During this clinical trial, 300 parturients with cephalic singleton pregnancy and intact amnion were studied. First of all, through the clinical examination, an expert resident had estimated the fetal weight, then, sonographic method was achieved. Immediately after birth, babies were weighed and differences were calculated within two range of ±200gr and ±10% of weight. Results: Of a total of 300 babies, 196 (65.3%) were weighed 2500-3500gr. Gestational age ranged 32-42 weeks (mean=38.5 weeks). Difference of estimations with actual weight was 186±131 gr and 203±130gr in the sonographic and CLINICAL METHODs, respectively (NS). Difference of estimation in 3500-4500ge-weighed babies were 155±100gr and 201±120.9 gr, respectively (p<0.02). There was no significant difference in babies less than 3500gr or those greater than 4000gr. Conclusion: Clinical estimation of fetal weight has acceptable results. With respect to the low number of cases under 2000gr or above 4000gr, further studies are highly recommended with greater sample size.
