Abstract

Background: HIP FRACTURE including intertrochanteric and femoral neck fractures are common in elderly people and have great effects on health care system and society in general. MORTALITY RATE following these fractures is significant and has reported to be as high as 37 percent within one year. Factors such as age, cardiopulmonary disease malignancy, dementia and malnutrition can aggravate it. The aim of this study was survival analysis in elderly (³60 year) patients with HIP FRACTURE admitted to Taleghani hospital during years 2003-2005.Materials and Methods: The study was based on an observation-analytical with non-prorable sampling. Survival state of the patients along with other related information was gathered from patient records or by phone calls. Then survival times and survival curves were achieved and analyzed by Kaplan Meier survival analysis.Results: Of 96 patients, 23 (24%) deaths occurred within 1 month and 48 (50%) cases within one year. In correlation analysis there was statistically significant relationship (p<0.05) between survival time and age. In Kaplan-Meier analysis, mean survival time was 558 days with SE of 55 and confidence interval of 450 to 667 days. Survivalrate was decreased with non-operative treatment, Concomitant systemic disease, age over 80 years and spinal anesthesia.Conclusion: MORTALITY RATE after HIP FRACTURE is high and is increased by age, non- operative treatment and systemic disease. Further researches in multiple centers are necessary to confirm the results.
