Title

EFFECT OF WATER STRESS ON COMPATIBLE SOLUTES ACCUMULATION IN ALFALFA CULTIVARS

Pages

  64-67

Abstract

Osmoregulation of the plant cells to maintain cell turgor in response to WATER STRESS is common.Comparison of four ALFALFA cultivars (Krisary, Ghareh Yonjeh, Sarbandy and Australian - 2129) in different moisture stresses (75% and 35% of field capacity) and nitrogen availability (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha N). showed that Krisary and Ghare Yonjeh were more tolerant than Sarbandy and Austalian - 2129. This may be due to accumulation of COMPATIBLE SOLUTES (proline and SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATEs). Accumulation of PROLINE in the plant tissue was more efficient than SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATEs in maintaining of cell turgor.WATER STRESS increased concentration of PROLINE and total SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATEs and decreased relative water content (RWC) of the plants. The relative water content of Sarbandy and Australian - 2129 was less than Krisary and Ghare Yonjeh. Leaf water potential measured by pressure bomb, showed that WATER STRESS decreases water potential of the plants. There was a positive relationship between RWC and water potential of the plants. Increase in accumulation of COMPATIBLE SOLUTES such as PROLINE and SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATEs in WATER STRESS condition may maintain cell turgor and RWC.Accumulation of COMPATIBLE SOLUTES also may be due to application of nitrogen fertilizer.
