Abstract

Climatic data is vital information in soil and water studies. Among them, rainfall is the most important information, influenced by number and location of weather stations. Thus, it is essential to estimate rainfall to an acceptable extend at the same location. In this regards, the geostatistical methods may be an appropriate way to estimate rainfall value based on its spatial variability. In this study, several spatial INTERPOLATION methods are investigated. Ordinary KRIGING with and without covariable, weighted moving average (WMA) with different exponents, and thin plate smoothing, plines (TPSS) with powers of 2 to 5 with and without covariable are applied. These methods have been evaluated by cross - validation techniques. Then, two statistical parameters such as mean bias error (MBE) and mean absolute error (MAE) are used. The results shows that the TPSS methods with power two and altitude as covariable demonstrated a superiority over all INTERPOLATION methods tested in this research (the minimum value of MAE was 34 mm).
