INTERACTIONS OF MYCORRHIZAE AND FARMING METHODS OF SAFFRON

Abstract

SAFFRON (Crocus sativus) is one of the economical plants that are cultivated extensively in north - eastern Iran (south-east of Khorasan province) where Irano - Turani vegetation type is dominant.Interaction of MYCORRHIZAE and traditional and mechanized farming methods of SAFFRON were investigated in a split - split plot design. Three hundred corems of the most common SAFFRON accessions collected from Khorasan were planted at rows 30, 40 and 50 cm apart. Mycorrhizal infection incidence increased with time towards end of winter in both traditional and mechanized farming methods. However, there was no significant difference in the mycorrhizal infection rate after 50 days of root inoculation with mycorrhizal spores.Mycorrhizal infection rate increased with closer distance of cultivation rows.Presence of SAFFRON corems in soil increased chances of mycorrhizal infection, particularly, in summer when water tension is high. Since, MYCORRHIZAE facilitate water and nutrient uptake in stressful conditions for SAFFRON root, extensions on endomycorrhizal spore development technology would enable undertaking of new cultivation grounds.
