AN INVESTIGATION OF PERSONALITY TRAITS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH IN RELATION TO COMMITTED SUICIDE IN A GROUP OF MILITARY SOLDIERS

Abstract

 Introduction: The present study is a practical and descriptive research. The fundamental aim of this review is determining the PERSONALITY TRAITS, physical and mental health of soldiers who had committed to SUICIDE in a military unit from 2006 to 2007.Method: The samples size contained of 92 soldiers who had committed SUICIDE but they were survived. These persons were selected in method Census. Subject were appraised with, GENERAL HEALTH questionnaire (GHQ), Beck Suicid Scale Ideation, Beck depression questionnaire and Eysenk personality. Data analyzed via SPSS software by applying statistical methods (frequency distribution, average, criterion deviation, correlation and T-test).Results: The results showed 10.9% of subjects were married and 89.1% were single. The highest frequency for soldiers' education was 45.7 % for middle school.28.4% was natives and 71.6% were non-natives. Also 44% had a committed SUICIDE before the study. Using a gun 49.9 %was the most commonly used method of SUICIDE.52.2% of the subjects had the intention to commit SUICIDE.84.8% had some problems with their GENERAL HEALTH. 93.5% were depressed. T-test analysis also showed that comparison between SUICIDE intention score had a meaningful difference with Eysenk personality questionnaire, Beck depression questionnaire and GENERAL HEALTH questionnaire. Higher rate of SUICIDE intention were among Introvert (14.59), Neurosis (15.79) and Psychosis (16.25).Discussion: Base on the results of this study some factor including, PERSONALITY TRAITS (introversion, neurosis and psychosis), depression, having suicidal thoughts, low level of public health, being unmarried and non-indigenous, are commons among soldiers with committed SUICIDE. So these factors are essential for screening soldiers who are at risk of suicid.
