Abstract

The present study investigated the effect of FAMILY TRAINING on the MENTAL HEALTH of the EDUCABLE MENTALLY RETARDED CHILDREN’S PARENTS. The experimental group was a school selected by cluster random method from among the exceptional schools in Shiraz city. The control group, children’s parents from other schools, was homogenized with the experimental group based on mother’s age of pregnancy, father’s education level, and birth sequence. Then, FAMILY TRAINING was administered on the experimental group within 16 two-hour sessions.Mental health was measured before and after FAMILY TRAINING program by GHQ-28 test and the result was analyzed by SPSS software and T-test.The results indicated that there was a significant difference, in p<0.05 level, between pre and post test mean scores in sub-scales of physical signs, anxiety and insomnia, social performance and severe depression in such a way that the experimental group’s MENTAL HEALTH was higher than the control group’s and this was an indication of the positive effect of FAMILY TRAINING on the MENTAL HEALTH of EDUCABLE MENTALLY RETARDED CHILDREN’S PARENTS.
