Abstract

Background & Aims: The Present study aimed to detect BACTERIAL AGENTs isolated from CULTURE of samples that were sent to laboratory of Shahid Faghihi Medical Center of Shiraz and determin their bacterial resistance.Materials & Methods: This cross- sectional descriptive study included 1500 CULTURE specimens consisting of urine, sputum, skin, throat, wound CULTUREs, etc that were sent to laboratory in a five months period -spring to summer 2006. The positive CULTURE, isolated BACTERIAL AGENTs and antibiogram test results were recorded in the observation sheet. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software, descriptive statistics, and X² test. Results: Out of 1500 CULTURE specimen, 502 were positive. 50.8 % of positive CULTUREs belonged to men and 49.2% to women. Gentamysin (99.8%), Ciprofloxacin (99.6%), and Cephalexin (95, 8%) were mostly used antibiotics. The bacterial resistance rates were 61.6%, 50.2%, and 94.6% respectively. The most resistancy to Gentamysine was related to Antrococc (96.7%) and the least was Ecoli (37.9%). X² tests showed that positivite CULTURE and antibiotic resistancy did not have relationship with patients' sex. Conclusion: The result showed that the increasing rate of bacterial resistance to current antibiotics are due to overconsumption. It is suggested to avoid unprescribed use of antibiotics. Further, production of effective new generation of antibiotics is essential.
