Title

CRITICISING DE MARTTONE REGIONALIZATION METHOD ACCORDING TO LINEAR MOMENTS FOR MAXIMUM DAILY PRECIPITATION IN IRAN

Pages

  93-103

Abstract

A region’s climate or weather is the result of the average of the outstanding climatic quantities of that region. DE MARTONNE is one of the well-known methods in this field. It classifies the region’s climate according to two factors: annual temperature and precipitation. In order to analyze the important events such as maximum daily precipitation, wind, flood, etc., it is needed to define homogeneity and discordancy of the region. In other words, the probable behavior of these events should follow a basic pattern. The linear moments method and homogeneity tests are among the most powerful methods in this field. The linear moments method is applicable to define the homogeneity of each and every event in one region. However, the traditional GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONALIZATION methods only make use of few events (mostly in general). This study analyzed the homogeneity and discordancy of the maximum daily precipitation of the meteorological stations for various climatical regions of the country. First, according to DE MARTONNE method, regionalization was done. Then, the homogeneity and discordancy of maximum daily precipitation of these regions were analyzed with the help of the linear moments method. The results gained from these analyses showed that DE MARTONNE method is not suitable for regionalization of maximum daily precipitation, except for Mediterranean region. As most of the regions in our country, IRAN, are arid and semi–arid, DE MARTONNE does not yield proper results. Therefore, in order to create homogeneity and discordant regions, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, the application of this method is not recommended.
