Abstract

The present survey investigated the Relationships between learners’ individual differences (IDs) (i.e., MOTIVATION, ATTITUDE, ANXIETY, AGE and GENDER) and LEARNING EFL among Iranian university students. The research design was basically descriptive. Research questions and hypotheses focused on discovering the possible relationships of the above independent variables of learners’ IDs and the dependent variable of learning English. Participants were 200 students who enrolled in EFL courses in Ahvaz and Abadan Isamic Azad University in fall semester, 2007. They were selected based on stratified random sampling among the research population.Research instrument was Arends’ (1998) Questionnaire of Self- Rating including 5-point Likert scale items. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics (i.e., Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Chi-square (X2) Analysis) by means of SPSS software. The results showed there were meaningful relationships between LEARNING EFL and learners’ MOTIVATION and ANXIETY (p<0.05). The findings revealed that EFL learners manipulated more instrumental MOTIVATION than negative one in learning English. The learners’ ATTITUDE towards LEARNING EFL was neutral (i.e., neither positive nor negative). Female learners showed higher ANXIETY level than their male counterparts. Pedagogical implications of this survey for enhancing teaching EFL strategies were thoroughly proposed.
