EFFECTIVENESS OF DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY IN TREATMENT OF BORDERLINEPERSONALITY DISORDER

Abstract

 The diagnosis of BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER conjures up thoughts of helplessness and hopelessness not only in the patient but of then in therapists. A belief that exist among mental health professional is the BPD is untreatable. The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT) in TREATMENT of women with Borderline of e Personality disorder (BPD). For the purpose of the study a quasi experimental design was used in which 8 female patients meeting criteria for BPD had participants in DBT program and 8 patient had been placed on waiting list. Two group also received medication. The assessment measures included SCID II, BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER severity index (BPDSI) which were administered to all subjects during the study phases included before intervention, after individual therapy, after group skill training and after follow up phases. ANOVA were used to examine the effectiveness of dialectical- behavior therapy in improving TREATMENT outcome.The finding showed that DBT group improve significantly more than participants on waiting list on abandonment, interpersonal relationships difficulties, identity disturbance, suicidal and parasuicidal behavior, affective instability and emptiness but it had no significant effect on impulsivity, anger and dissociation and paranoid ideation. The dialectical-behavioral therapy is effective in improving BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER.
