Abstract

In today's society most people acquire most of their information from media sources such as satellites than direct experiences; so, media sources can shape a person's sense of reality. Despite the passed law of banning the use of satellite equipment in 1994, we have currently more than twenty-five million Iranian audiences of satellite networks that has uncontrolled access to programs of satellite and the youth are the largest audience of these programs. With the advent of new media such as satellite we have witnessed conflicts between PARENTS and CHILDREN. Therefore, the current research is performed with the objective of studying the difference of attitudes of CHILDREN and PARENTS toward satellite programs and recognizing the EFFECTIVE FACTORS on their tendencies by using a survey and a multi-stage cluster sampling. Sample volume of this research is comprised of 250 youth of 18 to 29 year-old resided in dist. 4 of Tehran municipality. The obtained results of this research are:Average hours of watching satellite programs by CHILDREN are 3.07 hours per day with amount of 1 to 3 hours. Average hours of watching satellite programs by mothers are 3.81 hours and by fathers are 2.47 hours per day. Thus, mothers have major tendency toward CHILDREN in watching satellite programs. The results have indicated that there is a significant relationship between gender and tendency toward watching satellite so that women have major tendency than men and mothers watch satellite more than fathers. There was no significant tie between education and eagerness to satellite programs among CHILDREN and fathers; however, about mothers there was significant relationship between these two variables, so that educated mothers watch satellite less than the other ones. Furthermore, there was no significant tie between age and tendency of CHILDREN toward satellite and ethnicity with that. The results have shown that there is a significant difference between eagerness of PARENTS and CHILDREN about satellite programs. This difference in tendency is existed not only in amount of eagerness but also in selection of programs so that PARENTS are willing to watch more news and movies and CHILDREN are mostly eager to watch music and educational and scientific documentaries.
