Title

PREDICTING INCIDENCE OF CHRONIC PAIN BASED ON EARLY MALADAPTIVE SCHEMA

Pages

  49-60

Abstract

Aim and Background: There are many studies which have examined the relationship between CHRONIC PAINand childhood traumatic experiences. However, there are few researches on pain and EARLY MALADAPTIVE SCHEMAS; and their relationship is not clear. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between CHRONIC PAIN andEARLY MALADAPTIVE SCHEMAS.Methods and Materials: In a descriptive-correlation and cross-sectional study, 100 patients with chronicpain of college students were selected based on cut-off point of McGill pain questionnaire. They were selectedvoluntarily as samples. For data collecting, Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF) andMcGill Pain Questionnaire were used.Findings: The results of the stepwise regression showed that emotional deprivation schema has the most abilityin prediction of CHRONIC PAIN and then subjugation schema is most able to predict CHRONIC PAIN. Subjugationschema and abandonment/instability schema are able to predict EMOTIONAL PAIN regarding their descriptive ability, respectively. Emotional deprivation schema and emotional inhibition are able to predict NEUROPATHIC PAIN In thesame manner. In the meanwhile, Emotional deprivation schema is able to predict INTERMITTENT PAIN and Subjugationschema and emotional inhibition are able to predict VARIANT PAIN.Conclusions: According to the results, we can conclude that Emotional deprivation, Subjugation, abandonment/instability and emotional inhibition schemas among the three schema domains of disconnection -rejection, otherdirectedness, and over vigilance/inhibition are the important determinants of CHRONIC PAIN. So it seems necessaryto use schema therapy in pain management of patients with CHRONIC PAIN.
