EFFICIENCY OF ETHOLOGICAL BASED METHODS IN REDUCTION OF POPLAR STEM BORER, MELANOPHILA PICTA PALL. (COL.:BUPRESTIDAE) POPULATION

Abstract

 Poplar stem borer beetle, Melanophila picta. Is one of the most important pests attacking poplar trees throughout Iran, particularly in West Azarbaidjan. The satisfactory control of this pest cannot be achieved solely by pesticide application. During 1999-2001, various experiments were conducted to evaluate the control methods based on the pests? Ethological characteristics, including its response to parasol side of host trees, colour and shape of traps and other attractants such as geraniol, virgin female beetles and poplar extract (popolin). The extract was more effective than the other attractants. The results indicated that using rectangular silver colour aluminum foil ADHESIVE TRAPs was promising in attraction of adult insects. Each trap contained 50g of stable gum (CF37, 5SU, UK). Traps were setup vertically at the height of 1.5 m from the ground level on the parasol side of host trees. The results suggested that the pest population would be reduced adequately even if the silver ADHESIVE TRAPs were used on 10% of parasol host trees. Using this trap was considered to be valuable either as a component of any IPM program or an independent control tool. The technique was recommended due to lowering risk of environmental contamination through reducing pesticide application.
