Abstract

The purpose of the present study was developing and validates a scale for measuring Social Interest. The research was done based on a Survey which was in the form of a questionnaire designed by the researcher. The population of this research included the young adults of Shiraz. Cluster sampling was used to choose the 457 participants for this study. The face and content VALIDITY of the questionnaire were primarily established and approved by specialists of the field. An Exploratory FACTOR ANALYSIS was performed to establish the scale for social interest based on 4 factors and 27 items. On the four factors of "welfare of others", "Sympathy", "Social Interaction" and "Welfare of Self', eight, six, six and seven items were respectively loaded. The RELIABILITY of the questionnaire was checked by Cronbach's alpha and split half RELIABILITY which proved the questionnaire to have appropriate level of RELIABILITY. The construct VALIDITY of this questionnaire was also investigated through two hypotheses. These hypotheses revealed the correlation between levels of religiousness as well as age on social interest. The results supported a meaningful and positive correlation to support the hypotheses. In addition, the conformity FACTOR ANALYSIS of hidden variable of social interest was also supported an appropriate level of fitting with the four subscales of social interest. The results of this study shows the questionnaire provides an acceptable VALIDITY and RELIABILITY and can be used as an appropriate tool for measuring social interest.
