Abstract

 Sustainable TOURISM development as a paradigm, is the result of several lines of thought began nearly three decades ago. This paradigm is based on the assumption that "smaller is better". But this assumption is questionable in a world of change and uncertainty of today's conflicts. Sustainable TOURISM and ecotourism are often associated with dependence on natural environments. Development of systems thinking has led to new insights and more on TOURISM and will be continued in the future and question about the ability of sustainable TOURISM remains open and the advancement of knowledge will get more controversial. In general criticism of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT can be divided into four categories: the criticism that has been leveled to the ambiguity in the definition of this concept. The criticism of small scale. Green laundering and sustainability claims issues and finally the distorted facts. One of the fiercest critics of sustainable TOURISM development is Brian Wheeler, and researchers like him such as, Butler, Harrison, Sharply and Weaver. Their critical work has been reviewed in this study.
