Title

BACTERIOLOGICAL STUDY OF AZERBAIJANI BUFFALO'S URINE AT THE URMIA ABATTOIR

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION of URINE in apparently healthy AZERBAIJANI BUFFALOs brought to URMIA abattoir, Iran. A total of 120 URINE samples were taken directly from bladder of slaughtered AZERBAIJANI BUFFALOs (62 male, 58 female). Females divided into two age groups: under 3 years of age (n=36) and above 3 years of age (n=22). The samples were inoculated on MacConkey and blood agars and examined for aerobic bacteria. Results show that, only 8 out of the 120 URINE samples (6.67%) were positive for bacterial growth. The isolated bacteria were Staphylococcus intermedius in 3 samples (37.5%), Bacillus cereus in2 samples (25%), Bacillus subtilis in 2 samples (25%), Escherichia coli in 2 samples (25%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 1 sample (12.5%). Regarding URINE contamination, there were no significant differences neither in sex nor in age between groups (p>0.05). The result of this study showed that BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION of URINE can occur in clinically normal AZERBAIJANI BUFFALOs.
