The Relationship between Internet Addiction and Social Network with Academic Motivation in Students of Bojnord University of Medical Science

Abstract

 Introduction: The key role of Motivation in learning is undeniable. The academic achievement of medical Students is related to the health of the community; therefore, reduction or increase in Motivation and factors affecting it will have great impact on the individual and the health of the community. Social Networks and the Internet are factors that influence the Students' academic progress and Motivation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Internet addiction and Social Network with academic achievement in medical Students of Bojnurd University. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study 300 Students from Bojnurd University of Medical Sciences during years 2016 and 2017 were selected with Stratified Random Sampling and entered in the study. The data were collected and analyzed by the demographic questionnaire, Yang's Internet addiction inventory, and Inventory of School Motivation (ISM). Data were entered in the SPSS-16 software and were analysed using independent t-test and Pearson’ s correlation. P values of < 0. 05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Entertainment was reported due to the use of Social Networks in 162 (54%) of the sampled individuals. Social Network users had the following prevalences: 273 (91%) Telegrams, 17 (5. 7%) Instagrams, one (0. 3%) Lines, one (0. 3%) Viber, four (1. 3%) Beetalk, and four (1. 3%) Facebook. Internet addiction scores, time spent using Social Networks during the day, and academic Motivation score were, respectively, 16. 93 ± 44. 53, 2. 59 ± 4. 58, and 25. 63 ± 146. 78. There was a meaningful inverted and weak correlation between academic achievement and rate of using Social Networks (P = 0. 001, r =-0. 245). There was a meaningful inverted and very weak correlation between academic achievement and Internet addiction (P = 0. 001, r =-0. 197). Conclusions: Considering that medical science Students are responsible for the critical task of patient care and community health, the issue of their training, especially in the field of culture using Social Networks and the duration of using the Internet has special sensitivity. Therefore, considering the Students' ability to use the Internet, the use of distance education in their education is recommended.
