COMPARISON OF THE IMPACT OF EDUCATION BASED ON THE EMPOWERRMENT MODEL AND FAMILY-CENTER E18-27MPOWERRMENT MODEL ON KNOWLEDGE AND METABOLIC CONTROL OF PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract

 Introduction: EDUCATION is essential for obtaining a better glicemic control in patients with diabetes. One of the most effective factors affecting the quality of EDUCATION is the method selected for EDUCATION. On the other hand, EDUCATION of family members of such patients facilitate METABOLIC CONTROL. The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of EDUCATION based on the empowerrment model and family-center empowerrment model on knowledge and METABOLIC CONTROL of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Method: This is a clinical-trial study conducted in 2012 in which 153 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned into three control, patient-centered intervention, and family-centered intervention groups. Before the intervention and three months after that, the HbA1C test was conducted and the knowledge questionnaire was completed by the samples. Patient-centered empowerment and family-centered empowerment EDUCATIONal interventions conducted in the two interventns groups. Routine EDUCATION was conducted in the control group. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.Results: No significant differences were noticed in demographic inerventions between the groups before the intervention (p>0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was noticed between patients’ knowledge and the level of HbA1C in the groups (p>0.05). A significant difference was found between these two factors after the intervention (p<0.001). A significant difference was reported between knowledge and the level of HbA1C in the intervetion groups in comparision with the control group (p<0.05). While no significant difference was seen in the level of HbA1C between the intervention groups, the reduction of the level of HbA1C was more in the familycentered intervention group in comparison with. patient-centered empowerment group.Conclusion: Patient-centered empowerment and family-centered empowerment EDUCATIONal interventions have positive effects on METABOLIC CONTROL. Therefore, the participation of family members in the management and control of diabetes is recommended.
