THE EFFECTS OF PROBLEM-SOLVING TRAINING ON REDUCING ANXIETY AMONG NURSING STUDENTS

Abstract

 Introduction: ANXIETY disorder is the most common psychological issue has extremely increased among university students. This study conducted to examine the effects of problem-solving training on the nursing student's ANXIETY.Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest/posttest design. The study population was selected from all undergraduate NURSING STUDENTS of Islamic Azad University, Hamdedan Branch, during 2015-2016. From a total of the students, 83 cases were randomly selected as a representative of the entire population. The Cattell ANXIETY test (1973) was distributed among the participants to test the degree of their ANXIETY. Then, 36 participants who scored 40 on the Cattell ANXIETY scale were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups and their level of ANXIETY was measured under controlled conditions. Unlike the control group, the experimental group was instructed by the problem-solving skills throughout eight sessions. The Cattell ANXIETY scale was given to measure the level of ANXIETY for both experimental and control groups. Data were analyzed by an independent t-test and ANOVA.Results: The results showed a significant difference between experimental and control groups after receiving problem-solving training (P<0.001).Conclusions: The level of either overt or covert ANXIETY was significantly decreased among experimental groups when they received the treatment. Therefore, problem-solving training can be used for reducing ANXIETY among students.
