Abstract

Background and Objective: HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS is one of the most important factors in the physical and mental outcomes of CANCER patients. The Current study was conducted in order to determination of the role of health beliefs and Illness Perception in predicting HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS of patients with CANCER.Methods: In this cross sectional study, 125 CANCER patients, hospitalized in the Hematology section of Imam Khomeini hospital in Ardebil in the autumn of 2015 that were selected by convenience sampling, participated. For collecting data, the Illness Perception questionnaire, the Health Belief indexes and the Health- Promoting Lifestyle Profile were used. Gathered data were analyzed via Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis using SPSS19.Results: The results showed that the HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS in CANCER patients positively correlated to the General Health Threat (r=-0.18, P<0.05), the Perceived vulnerability (r=-0.33, P<0.001), the Perceived intensity (r=-0.30, P<0.001) and the Self-Helping benefits (r=-0.19, P<0.05). Among the Illness Perception components, the HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS have a positive relationship with the Acute timeline (r=-0.52, P<0.001), the Periodic timeline (r=-0.31, P< 0/001), the Outcomes of disease (r=-0.31, P<0.001) and the Emotional representations (r= -0.35, P<0.001) but have a negative relationship with Self-Control (r=0.35, P<0.001). Also, multiple regression analysis showed that 23% of the variance of the HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS is explained with the Health Beliefs and 39% of that is explained by the Illness Perception. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the beliefs about the situation and the outcomes of the disease and the quality of the Illness Perception in CANCER patients have a role in their tendency for doing the HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS.
