RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE, PERCEIVED STRESS AND MENTAL HEALTH IN SMOKING AND NON-SMOKING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

 The purpose of present study was to investigate the RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE, PERCEIVED STRESS and MENTAL HEALTH in smoking and non-smoking university STUDENTS. The study was a controled case study. The sample included 200 volunteer university STUDENTS (n=100 in SMOKEr and non-smoker groups). Then participants were assessed with the Baraheni RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE Inventory, PERCEIVED STRESS Scale (PSS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Data were analyzed using t-test. The results showed that there were significant differences between two groups regarding RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE, PERCEIVED STRESS and MENTAL HEALTH. So that the mean of RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE and positive PERCEIVED STRESS in non-smoking STUDENTS was significantly higher than smoking STUDENTS while the mean of negative PERCEIVED STRESS and MENTAL HEALTH in smoking STUDENTS was significantly higher than non-smoking STUDENTS. Also results showed that RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE in both groups had a posetive relationship with positive PERCEIVED STRESS and negative relationship with negative PERCEIVED STRESS and MENTAL HEALTH. On the other hand, MENTAL HEALTH had a negative relationship with positive PERCEIVED STRESS and a positive relationship with negative PERCEIVED STRESS. Results showed that increasing student RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE and training strategies for coping stress, we can prevent individuals from addiction.
